Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga's real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta.
Well known for her outrageous style. Her album Joanne is a contrast to her previous image as it is very stripped back and natural.

Early Lady Gaga is much more outlandish, as seen in the music video for 'Born This Way'.

'Million Reasons' is a much more conventional music video compared to Lady Gaga's old music videos. Her old content was outlandish and used shock factor to grab the attention of the audience, whereas the music video for 'Million Reasons' is much calmer and less outlandish. I think she changed her image because she has already solidified herself in the music industry and doesn't need to use shock factor to gain attention.

Billie Jean - Michael Jackson

1. What representations are shown?
Homeless man, police

2. What's the narrative?

3. How is Michael Jackson seen?
He gives money to a homeless man

The Billie Jean video was one of the first music videos by a black artist that aired regularly.

Billie Jean represents groupies he and his brothers encountered while part of the Jackson 5.

Representations of Ethnicity:
Alvarado (1987) identified four main types
1. The humorous, providing comic relief
2. The exotic; other cultures presented as unusual and exotic in their traditions and ways of living
3. The pitied; objects of pity and vulnerability
4. The dangerous; criminal, gangster and usually coupled with a binary opposition such as the respectable white character

- The reporter could represent Michael Jackson being hounded by the press
- They also represent a repressed community that is monitored and controlled by the press
- How does Michael Jackson demonstrate control over the situation?
- What could the cat turning into the tiger represent?
- What does the tiger print material represent?
- Billie Jean came out in 1982 but can be linked to life beyond the year of its production. Can you make any associations to modern day society?

Michael Jackson as a young black male can be seen in a negative light:
- He has been accused of doing something - creating a scandal - why he is being chased by the press
- Being deceitful - telling people to keep quiet
- Disappearing when the reporter tries to catch up with him

Explain how the representations in magazines reflect their contexts. Refer to The Big Issue covers you have studied to support your answer. (10)

The representations of people in The Big Issue reflect modern day society and subvert stereotypes. This can be seen in 'How To Be Happy', where the front cover uses dramatic irony and exaggerates different world issues. It applies the Semiology Theory by Barthes by using signs and symbols to convey meaning. For example, a symbol of Donald Trump's head on the Twitter bird with dollar symbols for eyes suggests that he is greedy and pursues wealth.
The 'Hit By A Car' issue applies Representation Theory by Hall. The man on the cover is described as 'incredible' and 'invincible'. This issue also does not try to sell itself using star power, instead using one of The Big Issue's employees.

The Big Issue is a niche magazine.
The magazine is part of a larger organisation and movement to help homeless people, it is not owned by a commercial company.
The magazine allows the homeless to work selling the magazine and receive half the cover price for every magazine sold.

The magazine is dealing with the issue of Brexit in a comical and irreverent way.
It is showing Brexit to be something which has divided the United Kingdom very strongly.
It is poking fun at this fact and portraying it to be something absurd which fits into a fictional comedy world better than it does in reality.
It is using intertextuality very strongly with its references to Alan Partridge and Malcolm Tucker.
